Europa Factoids!
- Since
the discovery that the
vast oceans on Europa may
be liquid, scientists
have focused on Europa as
perhaps the most likely
celestial body (other
than Earth) in the galaxy
to harbor life.
- Europa
is one of the sixteen
moons of Jupiter. It is
about the size of Earth's
moon. Because Europa is
covered with smooth white
and brownish ice, it
looks like a cracked cue
ball.
- Information
about Europa is being
sent to Earth by the
Galileo space probe,
which was launched in
October, 1989 and which
arrived at Jupiter in
December, 1995.
- Galileo
will pass by Europa 9
more times by the start
of the year 2000, sending
back 800 pictures from 50
different areas. Its
camera can see objects as
small as a football
field.
- Europa
is pulled and stretched
by huge gravitational
forces. A person standing
on the surface would feel
the ground rise and fall
as much as thirty feet!
